Olympians Play in Bowie
The U.S. Olympic Women’s Softball team will be playing an exhibition game against the National Pro Fastpitch league champions, the Washington Glory.
Before heading to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the team is touring the U.S., playing some of America’s best teams.
The powerhouse U.S. National team brought home three Olympic gold medals every year since softball was to the Olympic roster in 1996. Additionally, the team has won the World Cup of Softball for the past two years in a row.
This will most likely be the last time to watch an Olympic softball team in the U.S., as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted in 2005 to drop softball and baseball from the Olympics after the 2008 games. These two sports would be the first ones eliminated from the Olympic schedule since the 1936 Berlin games, when polo was cut. There may be a review by the IOC after the ‘08 games to reinstate the sports, but it’s looking doubtful, due to limited global popularity and participation in the sports.
