The New Newseum Opens April 11th

After a five year absence, (and an additional 6-month delay), the “new” Newseum in Washington, DC is scheduled to open in its new location on April 11, 2008.

The new 250,000-square-foot, seven-level museum dedicated to news and the press covers five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits.

Visitors will be greeted by a 74-foot-high marble engraving of the First Amendment when they enter the Newseum. They can then explore the 14 main galleries covering:

  • News History - This gallery highlights 30,000 historic newspapers and 5 mini-theaters covering top news from the past 500 years.
  • World News and Front Pages - Watch television news and compare press reports from 190 countries or browse the front pages of 80 newspaper from around the globe (plus another 400+ electronically).
  • Electronic News - Exploring the history of news communicated via the Internet, radio and television, this gallery covers initial radio news broadcasts, moves to the golden age of television, and ends with the digital age of Internet news.

  • First Amendment Rights - Using films, artifacts and exhibits this gallery covers the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment of The Constitution - freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly and the right to petition.
  • Photojournalism - This comprehensive collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning photos, and video and audio clips explores some of the most historic event of our time.
  • September 11th Gallery - Devoted to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, this gallery reviews how the global press covered this story.
  • Berlin Wall - The Newseum’s 8 panels is the largest collection of Berlin Wall sections outside of Germany. This gallery spotlights the media’s role during the wall’s 30-year history.

Other museums features include the two broadcast studios, the 7,000 sq. ft. interactive news gallery and 15 theaters, not to mention a great view of the Capitol and the National Mall.
