At the Copa…The Copacabana!!!
“I Write the Songs”, “Mandy”, and “Copacabana” are just a few of Barry Manilow hits.
In one year, 1978, he had 5 albums on best-selling charts - at the same time. Only Johnny Mathis and Old Blue Eyes, Frank Sanatra have achieved that type of popularity. But you either love him or…well, don’t care for him.
At the age of 5, Brooklyn-born Manilow recorded his first “record”, a version of “Happy Birthday” in a coin-operated recording booth. Almost sixty years later, and 40+ records later, his album sales has topped 70 million, with 31 records going platinum..
As a headliner at the Showroom at the Las Vegas Hilton since early 2005, Manilow is hitting the road, with a February 9th stop in DC.
After working with Bette Midler for four years (1971-75), Manilow released his first album, which did not make the charts. Yet the following year, an appearance on the pop music television program, American Bandstand, where he sang “Mandy”, jump-started his popularity.
By the 1980s, and after reaching superstar status, he sold out ten nights at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. His appearance set an all time box-office sales record - close to $2 million.
