Christmas Music at The Basilica

Christmas Music at The Basilica

In its 19th year, the annual holiday Concert for Charity features the Catholic University Chorus of over 130 singers accompanied by their Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Basilica Choir.
The concert, held at the Bacilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception packs music lovers into the basilica’s upper church pews to standing-room-only capacity, so plan on arriving early.
The concerts usually include vocal and instrumental pieces by famous composers such as Wagner and Bach.
The BNSIC is the patronal (guardian or protector) church for U.S. Catholics.  The lower church was completed in 1926 and has been in use …read more

Time for Another Carnival Of Cities

Time for Another Carnival Of Cities

At the Go Chicago Card blog, they are hosting this week’s Carnival of Cities. And it’s another great round-up of travel-related posts.
Here’s just a few:
This time, starting in Europe and a destination that I’ve always wanted to visit, Kristie at An American in Oslo Norway writes about the 25 things not to miss in Lithuania.
Something my Mother used to look forward to every Christmas season in Chicago — the weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market), but this one is in a cave in Valkenberg in the Netherlands.
Moving to the Americas, some issues with challenges of the new public bus …read more

The Perfect Gift - The Hope Diamond

The Perfect Gift – The Hope Diamond

Now you can have your own Hope Diamond or give one as a great gift. No, not the real one, that is unless you have about $250 million and can convince the Smithsonian to part with it. But a copy of the Hope Diamond. And what woman wouldn’t want one of her own?
This reproduction of the most famous Smithsonian gem, the  blue Hope Diamond has at its center, a cut glass blue stone encircled by 16 cubic zirconia diamonds. It can be worn as either a brooch to pendant.
The original Hope diamond was initially 112 carats and ultimately was …read more

Dancing with the Stars, sort of…

Dancing with the Stars, sort of…

One can only assume in an effort to milk it for all it’s worth, the Dancing with the Stars losers or is that runners-up, are heading out on a 10-week, 37 city tour, including a stop in Washington, DC. It’s the third Dancing tour since the popular show first aired on ABC.
The scheduled touring team of 14 dancers includes:

Marie Osmond, who will have hopefully found a way to work her now-famous fainting spell into the show.
Katrina Smirnoff, the five-time U.S. National Champion dancer, who we all found out is recovering from a “medical procedure” to her nose. Thanks to her publicist …read more

More from that "Alternative" Universe

More from that "Alternative" Universe

This photo is from yesterday morning (6:45 a.m.).  It was just 35 degrees at the time.  But by then, about 50 people were already in line at Toys “R” Us — a full 45 minutes before opening.  And two days AFTER that alternative universe shopping experience called 5:00 a.m. Black Friday shopping.

While I have no idea what they were waiting in line for, I can only assume it’s for the latest iDog, Wii, High School Musical board game, Webkinz or some other toy their kids will probably grow tired of by New Years.
Oh, the humanity…..

Monument Monday - The FDR Memorial

Monument Monday – The FDR Memorial

America’s 32nd and only 4 term President (1933-45), Franklin Delano Roosevelt led the nation out of the Great Depression and through most of World War II.
Growing up in upstate New York, FDR won a seat on the New York State Senate and later was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913.
In 1920, he ran for Vice President with Ohio Governor and Presidential hopeful James Cox, but was crushed by Republican Warren Harding.
The following year, while on vacation he became ill from polio, resulting in permanent paralysis from the waist down, leaving him almost incapable …read more

Art and the Feminist Revolution

Art and the Feminist Revolution

My first experience with “feminist art” was in 1980 when I attended the Judy Chicago exhibit of her piece The Dinner Party, in Chicago.  The piece is a triangle table of 39 place settings representing mythical and historical famous women throughout history. The place setting for each woman represented was a ceramic plate that all depicted a flower-like sculpture, representing metaphorically and in some cases realistically, the woman’s vagina.  Very edgy and controversial for the time. The Dinner Party, now on permanent display at the Brooklyn Museum is not part of the NMWA exhibit.
WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution is the first large scale exhibit representing …read more
