Toughest Choice of the Day

A Cold One With a couple thousand bars in the DC area, a place truly needs to offer something different to stand out and keep customers coming back. At the Brickskeller Inn Dining House and Down Home Saloon, they have found their niche – beer lovers.

With a beer list that could take you ten minutes just to read, beer lovers should be in beer heaven.

The list of beers… all 917 of them at current count, come from all corners of the globe. The countries of origin sounds like a UN role call, but with more exotic destinations, including Zimbabwe, Trinidad, Ghana and Ethiopia. The multitude of styles and mind-numbing options can make a decision almost impossible.

Similar to fancy umbrella and blender drinks, they also mix a few specialty beer drinks that may be a bit unique for the typical beer drinker. One is an Australian miner’s drink called the Blow My Skull Off, which is made with stout, rum, cayenne pepper, lime juice and at least back in the 1850s, a pinch of opium.

There’s also the classic 1950s drink which was favored by author Ernest Hemingway as a cure for a hangover, the Red Eye; concocted with beer and tomato juice, with a dash of Worcestershire, Tabasco sauce and horseradish to supposedly get the blood flowing.  For the American Pilgrim fan, try a Whistle Belly Vengeance made back in the 1600s with a equal mix of beer and rum with a dollop of molasses (yum). The Brickskeller also offers classic bar food and burgers and for the non-beer drinker, a selection of wines and hard alcohol.

Housed in a 1912 boarding house, the Brickskeller is also a five-story hotel overlooking Rock Creek Park. So if you over-indulge, rooms in the hotel start at around $65.
