Drive Carefully in Virginia,…or it May Cost You Big $$$
That is unless you are not a Virginia resident.
The Washington Post reported that as of July 1st, the Commonwealth of Virginia is adding on additional fines sorry “fees” to convictions for more serious driving offenses, such as 20+ over the speed limit (almost impossible not to do on The Beltway), drunk driving, and driving without a license.
In total, there are over 100 new “Civil Remedy Fees” listed on the books.
Some of the new fines “Civil Remedy Fees”, are on top of court costs and existing fines, are:
- Speeding 20+ mph over the limit - add $1,050.
- First-time drunk driving - add $2,250, each thereafter $3,000.
- Driving without a license - (suspended or revoked) add $750, no license add $900.
- Fee for excessive points - the “you’re a bad driver fee” (over 8 points on your record) - $75 for every point over 8 plus $100. For reference, a speeding ticket in Virginia of 1-9 miles over the limit earns you 3 points, 10-19 mph over earns 4 points and 20+ adds 6 to your record.
- Aggressive driving - add $1,050. This one alone should generate enough revenue to illiminate the state’s sales tax and property taxes in Virginia.
- Felony driving conviction (manslaughter, unauthorized use, etc.) - $3,000.
- Learner’s Permit violation (attention parents) - $900.
The fees only apply to Virginia residents, so you are are a tourist, Virginia is for Lovers and we still love you.
One other new law makes it illegal for Virginia drivers under 18 to drive while using a cellular phone (even hands-free) or while text-messaging.
Just last month, DC drivers were voted the 5th rudest drivers in the U.S.

Virginia just proclaimed itself the most fascist, corrupt state in the Union. We would be better off to have a mother drown her kids like Susan Smith did to shame S. Carolina or have a pedophile priest scandal that many states have had. This makes Virginia look like the worst state of all, even worse than D.C and in fact the laws make us the absolute worst. What an embarrassment and scandal. It figures some know it all, arrogant prick from Springfield,Va would be behind this. Springfield the rudest people in the entire state and a city known for not allowing you to do a U-turn ANYWHERE!!! Fat chance those elitists will vote out Abo.
Okay, John…I’ll assume you either are being very sarcastic (drownding kids and pedophiles are definatley not better than overly Draconian fines for driving infractions) or perhaps you are just reacting to just getting hit with a ticket with one of the new fines.
I think that the new va traffic laws are racist!, because just the citizens of va are being paying for all of the new roads while the out of state traffic speeds by……..shame and double shame on our new governor and the va law makers who better think about getting a new job at election time!!!!!!
I was born in Virginia and have lived in the state for most of my life. I have realized over the years that Virginia is aggressively pursuing the status of worst state in the US. Virginia - where everyone is an outlaw except the cops.
What is the cop-to-ordinary-citizen ratio in Virginia? It is probably the highest in the nation.
What happens when you don’t pay those fines? You are a criminal and will go to jail!
Cite the recent news of 1.4 million outstanding warrants in Pennsylvania (population 12,440,621)? 1 for every 8.9 persons! I’d be willing to bet the ratio is higher in Virginia.
Virginia needs a new slogan, one that fits:
“Virginia - Police State USA”
[...] a potential violation of due process. Perhaps it will receive as much heat as the recent Virginia Civil Remedy Fees for bad [...]
[...] $12,000 Speeding Ticket.. Nothing as hefty as that but in Virginia it doesn’t pay to speed…. Drive Carefully in Virginia,…or it May Cost You Big $$$ __________________ …just CREWZIN along!
WHAT WOULD I EXPECT IT TO COST ME FOR A SPEEDING TICKET OF 5 OR 10 MPH OVER SPEED LIMIT COST ME WHILE TRAVELING THROUGH VA
That depends on where you got the ticket, and who gave you the ticket - a state officer, or a country or city/town police officer. Each jurisdiction has a different fee structure. But I would think it would be under $75.00.
Virginia is a very corrupt state!
If you want justice as an innocent victim hurt in this state, you better have some good contacts! or else - forget it!
