Ever wonder how America’s first First Lady entertained her afternoon guests?

Travel back in time for your opportunity to experience Revolutionary-period history with Martha Washington as she hosts an 18th century tea party and tells you about the customs, clothing, dancing and life in general during the early days of America.

The 18th century tea event at historic Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in suburban Alexandria, VA includes the museum’s special blend of tea, pound cake, dried fruits, and assortment of cookies.

Some Facts About Martha Washington

• Her marriage to George Washington was not her first. Her first husband died 8 years after they married, leaving her a widow (and a rich one) with 2 children.
• Martha had some serious competition - George Washington had a crush on a pretty neighbor, not Martha, but Sally Fairfax, but she married another man.
• She was too grief-stricken to attend George’s funeral.
• The title “First Lady” was not coined until after her death. She was known as “Lady Washington”.
• Martha had the distinction of having the first U.S. military boat to be named in honor of a woman (USS Lady Washington) and while the person was still alive.
• She never lived in the White House - it was not yet built.
• She did not enjoy traveling to the U.S. capital cities at the time - first New York and then Philadelphia, as she preferred life at Mt. Vernon.
