WNBA Mystics Season Opener

by Jon on May 12th, 2007

Mystics - Alana BeardThe Washington Mystics of the WNBA tip off their 10th season with a home opener on Saturday against their conference rival, Connecticut Sun.

Last season, the Mystics ended the season in 4th place in the Eastern Conference with 18 wins and 16 losses and a 13-4 home record. The Mystics play 17 home games this season. The 2007 nationally-televised WNBA All-Star game will also be played at the Verizon Center on July 15.

The WNBA was established in 1997 and the following year became the women’s league of the NBA and has 13 teams. The only major differences form NBA rules are four 10-minute quarters vs. two 20-minute halves, the three-point line is 3.25 feet closer (20.5′ vs. 23.75′). And the regulation WNBA ball is 1-inch smaller than the NBA ball. This year a new rule allows coaches to also call timeouts.

The mystics are also hosting a street festival before the game, starting at 2:00 p.m. The fest includes The Mystics Mayhem pep squad, live music, trivia giveaways and player introductions.
