When Science Collides with Dance…

by Jon on April 15th, 2007

Ferocious Beauty - Genome 2You end up with a multi-media dance project that collaborates dancers, artists, scientists and academia in an exploration of the impact on humanity of genetic science. In Ferocious Beauty: Genome from the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, she teamed with scientists and scholars from institutions such as the National Institute of Health, John Hopkins, Stanford and Howard Universities.

Collaborating with these scientific minds, she developed a performance that educates and explaining the issues surrounding genetics as well as exploring the highly emotional topic of genetic engineering. Using video clips and direct input to help choreograph and narrate complex concepts help explain the science of genetics and the impact it has on all of us.

Watch as the process of natural evolution bangs up against the complexities of genetic engineering. Using music and dance, along with a background story that melds video with special effects as it examine the scientific gains and ultimate risks of playing with nature - not just today, but for generations to come.

Think of it as a dance “think piece” — life, death, the history of genetics, gene structures, aging and hereditary, all driving the quest for human perfection.

This should be one of the year’s more interesting and thought-provoking dance performances.

After the Friday and Saturday performances, there will be a discussion/talkback with leading genetic scientists. plan on staying after Sunday’s performance for a poetry science slam.
