The Three Wise Shepherds
On the eve of the birth of baby Jesus, three lowly shepherds bed down and fall asleep while tending to their flocks. A thief steals a prized sheep and with the help of his wife, disguises it as their own newborn son. The three wise shepherds eventually realize the theft and discover the thieves, bringing them to justice, but with merciful twist that fits the season of compassion.
In a second, but related story, an angle appears and tells the three shepherds (similar to three wise men) of a child born in a Bethlehem manger. And the shepherds become part of the Nativity story.
The origins of the popular family-friendly medieval-period Christmas play, The Second Shepherds’ Play is thought to be from the 16th century, based on the recovered British manuscripts in which it was found.
This production at Folger Theater also weaves 15th century music to accompany the story.
