The “Queen Of Rockabilly”…Wanda Jackson - Dec. 8th

by Jon on December 6th, 2006

Considered one of the first (if not the first) American female rock & roll singer, Wanda Jackson has been rockin’ since 1957.

With over 50 albums under her belt, a couple of Grammy nominations for best female singer and inductions into Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame, among others, she’s one of the few rock and roll pioneers still performing.

Having toured in the early days of rock & roll with Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and even the “King” Elvis Preseley. She dated the “King” when he was still relatively unknown singer. Wanda shifted from country-gospel to the evolving new sounds of rock & roll.  Known for her twangy, throaty ballads and distinctive powerful vocals, her high energy made her the top rock & roll hellcat.

Long before Madonna perfected female sexuality as part of the ”show”, Wanda used her good looks and sex-appeal as part of her act.  Before her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, she was told to cover her shoulders as management thought her dress was too reveling.  In true rebel style, she decided not to perform there again.

Wanda Jackson - Greatest Hits

Her career has spanned the musical ranges of country, rock & roll, rockabilly and in the 1970s, she returned to her original roots - country-gospel.

She’s had a few top 20 hits during her 40-plus year career including her most famous, Fujiyama Mama.

Expect her performance to live up to her reputation as a midwestern TORNADO!
