The New York Dolls
Despite the fact that only a couple of the original five New York Dolls are still alive (two died from drug overdoses), here’s a chance to see one of rock’s truly influential and wild bands.
Call them pre-punk, proto-glam, or just high-energy with a “style” of their own, the Dolls influenced the future sounds of American punk, new wave, metal, glam and the grunge sound. Not known for their musical talent in the earlier days (1970s), they made up for it in live shows with their outrageous (cross-dressing) costumes and hard-edged but kitsch attitude.
Their first break came from Rod Stewart when they opened for him on tour. Later, the Dolls toured on the infamous Anarchy Tour with punk’s bad boys, the Sex Pistols.
From an online review of the Dolls, musically (they were) made up of equal parts Iggy Pop swamp-monster sleaze, Lou Reed’s gritty street-sense, T. Rex’s jangly mess, and the charging glam-jam of David Bowie. The result was The New York Dolls were louder, and even more strung-out than their peers.
