The Heidi Chronicles
Follow the 16 year old Heidi Holland from a high school dance in Chicago in 1965 to her college days working for Eugene McCarthy, to Women’s Lib semi-radical feminist (who seems to have forgotten to burn her bra),to a leading art historian (or rather a “women’s art historian) 20 years later.
She tries to find purpose, happiness and connect with her fellow-women, while protesting, engaging in consciousness “rap sessions”, sitting on a talk show panel. She tries to understand her role as a woman and searches for love, meaning and happiness through her friends and lovers.
Performed in the theater-in-the-round, the dialog is at times in your face and at others, rather subtle. She tells people what they want to hear, yet as she grows, she gives us a look deep into her soul as she expresses self-doubt, indignation and her own form of righteousness.
The Heidi Chronicles is not just a story about one woman and her road to self-awareness, but a story of how the roles of women have changed, while many of their dreams and hopes have not.
In 1989, the play won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama a Tony Award for Best Play and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.
