The Gargoyle’s Den - Just for Kids

by Jon on March 7th, 2007

Gargoyle at the Nat'l. CathedralWashington National Cathedral is known for its unique and stunning architecture.

But getting kids interested in a visit may be a bit of a challenge.  Even though the Cathedral boasts:

  • Towers that are 300 feet tall
  • Over 100 gargoyles
  • Over 200 stained-glass windows
  • The largest stained glass window is a 26 foot rose window with over 10,000 pieces of glass
  • 53 bells, the largest being over 8 feet tall and weighing over 24,000 pounds

Every Saturday, the Cathedral hosts The Gargoyle’s Den, where kids aged 6-12 can get a better understanding of Cathedral’s construction with a hands-on arts and crafts program. Kids can try their hand at carving a real stone gargoyle and even make one out of modeling clay to take home. They can learn about and build arches, mosaics as well as having a chance to try their hand at making a stained-glass window.

Most families will spend about 90 minutes in The Gargoyles Den.
