Sometimes I’ve seen some of the most enjoyable and affordable theater productions, not at the Kennedy Center or the National Theatre, but at some of the 80 small local community playhouses in the Washington, DC area.  It’s usually easy to find a fun, interesting and hopefully great performance.
And where else can you find award-winning plays being produced by people who perform just for the love of being on stage? Plus, tickets to most local community theater performances cost not much more than the cost of a movie ticket and popcorn.

This British play-within-a-play at the Arena Stage, is a fast-paced and hilarious farce about a third-rate theater group putting on a fourth-rate sex romp.
Noises Off is more about the cast as they attempt to interact with their pained and tormented director while dealing with massive egos, sexual tension, backstage chaos, jealousy, bickering and a plate of sardines than about the play they are attempting to put on.
You follow the troupe’s controlled pandemonium starting with the final dress rehearsal, to backstage opening night, and ending with the same performance months later as the play winds down for its disasterous closing night.  You …read more
