The sensual and fiery emotions of flamenco is said to have started with songs and dances that recall the hopes and sorrows of Gypsies.

Over the centuries flamenco has evolved from folk dancing to a form of passionate performance art.

Ballet Flamenco José Porcel, from Spain, will perform a combination of traditional and modern flamenco works, which combine influences from Gypsy, Arabic, Jewish and Indian cultures.

Principal dancer José Porcel, has performed with some of the world’s greatest flamenco dancers.

Over nine days, Washington, DC comes alive with the power and grace of Flamenco!

Dancers, guitarists and singers invade DC delivering their own special Flamenco passion at the 8th Annual Flamenco Festival at GW University’s Lisner Auditorium. This year’s festival joins some of flamenco’s greats with some of the upcoming soon-to-be stars.

Classic Flamenco Guitarist – Paco de Lucia

Paco de Lucia has become synonymous with passionate flamenco guitar, blending the traditional Spanish style fused with jazz, rock and rumba. Introduced to guitar by his father, a day laborer, who played guitar at night as a way to supplement the family’s income. In the early 1960s, at the age of 14, Paco was touring as a guitarist with the world-famous flamenco dancer, Jose Greco.

He developed his own style over the next couple decades and eventually toured or recorded with the likes of jazz pianist Chick Corea, and guitarists John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell and Al DiMeola. Since the 1960s, he has recorded over 25 records.

While the origins of flamenco are disputed, it is known that this passionate folk music sprang from the lower classes in southern Spain over several centuries. It was used to tell stories from generation to generation.

In the second half of the 19th century, flamenco developed quickly with guitar players and singers supporting dancers performing in local cafés. In private homes and street corners, an ad hoc flamenco jam session or fiesta, could go on long into the night.
