This week, The Spice Girls, probably the most popular all-gal singing group in history, will be in town to perform at the Verizon Center. 

In 1996, The Spice Girls took over the UK and U.S. pop music scene with their Girl Power themed tunes, mostly targeted at teen girls.  Within a couple years, they had sold 55 million records and were a global music phenomenon.

They split up in 2001 only to reunite in 2007, after pursuing mostly unsuccessful solo careers.  No longer using their original nicknames of Scary, Ginger, Baby, Posh and Sporty, they also have seemed to put their well reported differences behind them; at least long enough for their tour. Reports indicate that their reunion tour has been seen by over 4 million fans. 

So what have the Spice Girls been up to since they were as globally recognized as The Fab Four?

• Black dress wearing Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice, seems to have made a career out of just being a famous tabloid cover girl and the wife of pro soccer star David Beckham.  She’s taken a shot at acting, had a husband and wife reality show and written a couple books. • Street-tough Melanie Brown, Scary Spice, was on “Dancing with the Stars” and was trying to break into acting by doing some television hosting.
• Redhead Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, releases several number 1 singles during her solo career. She later became a UN Goodwill Ambassador promoting woman’s health issues. She has also written a series of children’s books.
• The youngest Spice Girl, Emma Bunton, Baby Spice, also released several solo CDs and made it to the semi-finals on a BBC reality dance show.
• Sporty Spice, Melanie Chisholm, like a coupe of her other Spice sisters, had a couple hits and also launched her own record label.

Their 2007-008 world tour will end within a week after their Washington, DC visit.  And one member of the group recently stated publicly that this will be group’s last tour. And with tickets starting at $72.50 for nose-bleed seats, you can see why another tour isn’t needed.

Performances have received rave reviews as the high-energy pop music event of the year, yet the singing has met with mixed reviews. But then…it is The Spice Girls.  The same group that gave the us Spice World, the movie that earned the group a Golden Raspberry award in 1998 for worst actress.

Parking – limited street parking in the area, but various paid lots and garages are within a short walk.
