Some learned their trade at Chicago’s famous Second City, others at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade or other improv schools across the U.S.  The best ended up in Hollywood or on Saturday Night Live.

But improv is a learned craft, where students learn the basic skills of listening, spontaneously, off the cuff story-telling, confidence, teamwork, comedic instincts and how to never stop or never laugh, no matter what happens.

If you have a desire to try out your comedic skills, why not take a basic introductory improv class at The Comedy Spot, in Washington, DC?

The class, Improv 101: Elements of Imp, taught by Shayna Willis and Katie Dunn, a couple Comedy Spot regulars, includes eight weekly 2-hour improv classes. With your “final” graduation being a live performance at the club.

To help the learning process, students can attend any of the weekly ComedySportz and Blue Show performances for free while taking a class.

Yes, at humor.

And here’s your chance to see some of the funniest college students from eight universities around the Washington, DC area.  Since the beginning of year, The DC Improv comedy club, has been hosting stand-up comedy competitions at several universities around the area.

The competitions allowed eight to ten wanna-be comedians to compete by performing  a five minute original comedy routine, in front of a panel of judges and their peers.

One or two students per school was selected to compete in the finals, and now has a chance to win a paid job, hosting at The DC Improv.

In its fifth year, the first two years were won by Georgetown students. In 2006, Howard University took the prize, and last year a George Mason University student was voted funniest.

The 11 comedians that are competing hail from:
