Inauguration Events for Barack Obama

Inauguration Events for Barack Obama

Historically, the inauguration of a new President includes many events seeped in tradition.  On January 20th, 2009, the list of inaugural events include:

Morning Worship Service, a tradition started in 1933 by Franklin D. Roosevelt
Motorcade Procession to the Capitol, where President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush will accompany the President-elect Barack Obama and his wife and Michelle to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony.

Attending the Inauguration? Take the Poll

Attending the Inauguration? Take the Poll

Here’s the latest poll on The DC Traveler…
Are you attending the Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, on January 20th, 2009, in Washington, DC?
Potential presidential inauguration attendees estimates range from 1 million people, up to 4 million, making hotel rooms that week tough to find (or perhaps more accurately…tough to afford).  Flights in and out of Washington, DC are also more expensive during that week.
Even DC’s Mayor, Adrian M. Fenty mentioned that there could be as many as 3 million attending the inauguration.
The largest crowd attending an inauguration was  for President Johnson, when close to one million attended …read more

National Museum of American History Reopens Today

National Museum of American History Reopens Today

The National Museum of American History, is reopening after a two year, $85 million renovation project.

The museum upgraded many of the environmental and physical facilities (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, fire and security systems, elevators, heating, etc., along with a 600-seat cafe), but will also feature several major upgrades and visitor enhancements, including:

A new state-of-the-art gallery for the giant Star-Spangled Banner flag that flew over Fort McHenry that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became The National Anthem.
10-foot-high artifact walls on the 1st and 2nd floors displaying 400 of the museum’s 3 million historical objects

Since then, all other presidential inaugural addresses have been made from the steps of the Capitol Building, except for FDR’s address starting his 4th term, which he made at the White House.

Honor Veterans Across American Today

Honor Veterans Across American Today

Veterans Day is the one day each year Americans can honor the service and sacrifices of the American soldier.
Originally called Armistice Day, November 11th, commemorates the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.  The “Great War” formally ended 90 years ago today, on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918.  Sadly, news of the wars end did not reach many non-European fighting fronts due to poor communications, notably across Africa, for up to two weeks.
After World War II, President Eisenhower signed a bill into law in 1954 to rename …read more
