Philadelphia - The City of Brotherly Love…
…and Philly Cheese Steaks!!
As my last post mentioned, I visited Philly this past weekend, mainly to see the King Tut exhibit, but Philly is a great town for a quick day trip or get-away weekend.
Here’s my list of fun things to do - all in one day or over a weekend:
- Independance National Historical Park - visit The Liberty Bell and see the famous bell that rang in freedom and democracy and tour Independence Hall, where the Second Continental Congress met and signed the Declaration of Independence and the first independent government of the U.S. took shape. Open daily 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Rodin Museum - The largest collection of Rodin’s works outside of Paris. The museum includes bronze castings statues, plaster studies, drawings, prints and more. There’s a great photo op in front of the museum where you can pose in front of Rodin’s The Thinker. Open Tuesdays through Sundays 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Free, with a $3.00 recommended donation.
- Philadelphia Museum of Art - Browse through over 200 galleries of artworks including European, American, modern and contemporary, Asian, photographs, textiles, and more. The museum has a great collection of Impressionists, but then again we may be a bit spoiled with the National Gallery of Art and other art museums here in DC. Run up the long front stairs just like everyman Rocky Balboa did in the movie Rocky and have your photo taken in front of his statute on the grounds to the right of the main entrance. Open Tuesdays through Sundays 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., open late on Fridays until 8:45 p.m. Admission is $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for kids 13-18, and free if they are 12 and under.
- Pat’s King of Steaks - While I’m sure arguments will rage into the future about who makes the best Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich, no trip to Philly is complete without sampling a Philly cheese steak sandwich. Stop by the “original” Philly Cheese Steak joint for the sandwich that made Philly famous.

National Constitution Center in Philadelphia is amazing. It is right next to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. It is definitely the one MUST thing to do if you are in Philly. They have a breaking barriers in sports exhibit right now that is worth seeing. Check their site for events and changing exhibits.
