Marine Corps Marathon of the Monuments

by Jon on October 4th, 2007

MArathon 2006 - 2 It’s time once again for the 32nd annual Marine Corps Marathon.

Some great viewing locations of the 15,000 expected runners include the starting point, where you can watch the massive wave of runners near Arlington National Cemetery (Pentagon station on the Blue or Yellow lines) followed by the start of the 10K race.  Spectators can then either cross the Memorial Bridge to a point near the eleven-mile marker next to the Lincoln Memorial or grab the Metro from Pentagon or Arlington Cemetery to several Metro stations near the route, (Federal Triangle, Smithsonian or L’Enfant Plaza stations) and watch the runners race through the Mall.

Another relaxing viewing location might be at Hains Point (mile 17) along the picturesque Potomac River in East Potomac Park.  Pack a picnic and make an afternoon out of it.

The third location might be on the Key Bridge at the 4.5 mile marker, then to the entrance to the Whitehurst Freeway (mile 9).

The 26 mile marathon route passes some of DC’s most popular tourists sites, including Kennedy Center, and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the Washington Monument and The Capitol.

Thirty-eight separate streets closings are planned, some as early as 4:30 a.m. with the last streets opening up near the finish around 3:30 in the afternoon.  So plan on challenging traffic during the morning and early afternoon as well as a crowded Metro just prior and after the race.
