Just for Kids - Discovery Theater

by Jon on June 25th, 2007

Amazed KidThe Smithsonian’s Discovery Theater, is just for kids. For 25 years it has been presenting fun, innovative, educational, and entertaining live performances for kids and their parents. Staging thirty productions each year, the shows feature dancers, actors, musicians, puppets and storytellers in performances that present tales from around the globe.

Their July schedule includes:

  • Under the Sea - Sea creatures and ocean life by naturalist Andrew Wilson.
  • Summer Africa - Celebrate summer… Ugandan-style!
  • Robert Strong…Nothing Up His Sleeve! - Magic, juggling and comedy for kids.
  • The Whatza-Puppet Show - Master puppeteers create puppets out of just about anything and then put on a show.

hi Jon, this is great! We’re taking a mini-break this July 4 and plan to explore DC. thing is, hubby and I have a two-year old toddler in tow. We’re thinking the Washington DC zoo might be a good place to start, and then this theater. Where else can we take her?

Here are a couple ideas, not sure if these are great for a 2 year old…also a couple links to ideas.

    - The National Museum of Natural History - dinosaurs, insects, animals (but this may be more appropiate for bigger kids). Check out the Discovery Room.
    - Jefferson Memorial - Tidal Basin paddle boats.
    - Feed the ducks and birds (while your kid chases them) at the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Great photo op.
    - Hanes Point - more photo ops - http://www.thedctraveler.com/neptune-on-the-potomac-the-awakening-haines-point/
    - Carosel on the Mall - have a bite of cotton candy too. http://www.thedctraveler.com/kids-fun-on-the-mall/

    Hope these help.
