Disco Lives…

by Jon on February 11th, 2008

Disco Ball - Fickr - SabastianNiedich …well, maybe only in the hearts of people over 40.

But you can still learn to “touch” dance the hustle, the cha-cha, or jump in a line dance at the disco dance lessons offered at eCitie in suburban Tysons Corner, Virginia.

Learn to dance to the classic disco hits like “The Hustle”, “Love to Love You, Baby” and “Love’s Theme” by Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Then throw on your favorite white suit, complete with shiny polyester shirt and dance to the best-selling soundtrack of all time (in 1977), the album that turned disco mainstream - Saturday Night Fever.

After less than 3 years of mainstream acceptance, anti-disco feelings developed across the country.  The day music historians refer to the ‘day disco died’ was in July 1979, when between a Chicago White Sox double header, a local radio station sponsored a “Disco Demolition” event.  One hundred thousand disco records were going to be burned in center field by a disco-hating crowd.  They unfortunately went wild, tearing up the field and stadium. The rioting fans caused so much damage, the Sox had to forfeit the second ball game.

While the pure disco sound and disco-playing clubs waned over time, the sound influenced early hip-hop and rap and still influences music and musicians today.  So…Do the Hustle!

Join hustle dance champion and instructor, Joyce Szili for an introductory lesson at eCitie on Wednesday evenings.
