The Pentagon City Ritz Carlton Hotel - Service as it Should Be

What can I say?  The Ritz Carlton hotel chain is one of my favorite hotel chains.  And there’s a good reason.  They provide service as it should be.
I had the opportunity to tour and spend the night at the Pentagon City Ritz Carlton Hotel in suburban Arlington in mid-February.
Attached to the Pentagon […]

Hit the Slopes

Now that the temperatures are  more typical of winter, it’s time to think about snowboarding and skiing.
Within about a 3½ hour drive from Washington, DC, are close to a dozen ski resorts. All offer traditional skiing and snowboarding, others include snowmobiling, snow-tubing and ice skating options. For relaxation and to comfort tired bodies, spa […]

Inauguration Day Balls

In just under one year, on January 20th, 2009, failing a coup, revolution or a major legal battle over hanging chads, a new president will be taking the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
Thomas Jefferson was the first president to take the oath in Washington. And Andrew […]

Crystal City

The neighborhood of Crystal City in southeast Arlington VA, is within walking distance of Reagan Washington National Airport, the Pentagon, Pentagon City Mall and the National Air Force Memorial.

Monument Monday - Vietnam Woman’s Memorial

Perhaps the most unrecognized heroes of the Vietnam War were the 256,000 women who served in the Army, Navy, and Air Force during the war years.  Among them, 11,000, mostly nurses and medical specialists, served in-country and in or near combat zones.
Working mostly in military hospitals, aboard ships and with evacuation squadrons, these brave […]

The Willard Hotel - Power Central

The Willard Hotel has been probably the most famous unofficial center of power in U.S. history.
President Ulysses S. Grant, a frequent visitor to the Willard Hotel, allegedly coined the term “lobbyist”, when describing running a gauntlet of political wheelers and dealers he preferred to avoid hanging out in the lobby of The Willard Hotel.  All […]

Live Like a Local, Rent a DC Condo

If you’re visiting DC for a week or more you might want to think about renting a condo versus staying at a hotel.
Each option has it’s advantages and disadvantages.  Do you want somewhere where you and your friends can cook a meal?  Do you really need daily maid service? Do you enjoy traveling with friends […]

A Great Guest Post from Family Travel

My buddy Sheila at Family Travel just returned from what sounds like a fun family trip to Virginia’s “historical triangle” - Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.  She graciously offered to write a guest post for The DC Traveler.  There’s tons going on in the triangle, and it’s not just limited to historical attractions.

Visit Paris

While Lynn at The Paris Traveler may be a bit surprised see that I’m writing about Paris, she shouldn’t feel any competition.
About 60 miles west of DC is a quaint little town of Paris… Paris, Virginia, just a bit west of Middleburg.  It’s population…only 49.   I happened across Paris a couple weeks ago on a […]

007, License to Thrill…New Year’s Eve

Tis the season for Bond…James Bond.
This New Year’s Eve Euronet International is hosting an all Bond international New Years Eve 007 License to Thrill party for “sophisticated singles, couples and groups alike”.
This black tie party has, obviously, a 007 theme.  Attendees “travel” around the globe Bond-style, to party rooms featuring a different country’s […]
