An Overnight Fire Damages Historic Eastern Market
As I mentioned in my first post today, Sunday was a beautiful day. While biking the Mall, I also took a spin over to Eastern Market and chatted with one of the more interesting outdoor vendors that I’ll be writing about in the near future.
But early Monday morning, Capital Hill residents learned of the overnight fire that did major damage to Eastern Market. The historical indoor and outdoor market complex is the site of flea market, artist’s gallery, farmer’s market, antique bazaar, flowers shop, bakery and butcher shop spread over a couple blocks.
The South Hall at 7th Street and North Carolina Avenue, SE, which houses the food vendors was severely damaged while the North Hall, used by some of the art vendors, was not as damaged.
The localy famous breakfast and lunch counter, The Market Lunch, known for it’s blueberry pancakes, and some of the fish, produce and meat vendors may attempt to reopen in temporary space outside. The city may close part of the street in front of the market to accommodate the additional vendors.
DC’s Mayor Fenty, after touring the market, pledged to rebuild.

Thanks Katherine. These shirts are for a great cause.
I did a bit of research and the shirts were designed by an American Univ. graphic design professor who lives on the Capitol Hill. Shirts are $20, with $14 being donated to vendors and workers who were impacted by the fire.
