American Idols Hit DC

by Jon on September 2nd, 2007

Regardless if you’re a fan or not, American Idol is a television phenomenon that has much of America mesmerized a couple nights a week.  It’s also rewritten television history.  It has forever changed prime time formatting as it regularly attracts close to 30 million loyal viewers each episode.

American Idol was developed by the ever-obnoxious Simon Fuller, who introduced the world to one of the most “talented”, “classy” and “musically-gifted” singing groups ever…The Spice Girls (please, note my sarcasm).

The first American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, went from unknown singer to platinum selling pop star virtually overnight.  Her first album sold 3.6 million copies, her second went multi-platinum with over 11 million copies sold.

The subsequent Idol winners, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Jordin Sparks have also made their own niches, some achieving more success than others.

But what happens to the runners-up on American Idol? People like Sanjaya Malakar (and why do I even know this guy’s name???), or LaKisha Jones?  They go on tour and milk their American Idol fame for all it’s worth…until the runners-up from the 7th season of Idol hit the road.

For a list of the scheduled singers and songs, check out another b5media blog, Idol Stalker.

And no, this post is not an attempt to maximize my SEO (search engine optimization) by using the term “American Idol” over and over.  Now if I had added Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, MySpace, Google, eBay, Yahoo, Mapquest and You Tube, I might be guilty.

[…] American Idol Hits DC You know, I’m going to have to start watching this show more often. I must be the only person in the country who doesn’t recognize more than half a dozen names. […]

American Idol is one of my guilty pleasures. I’ve watched every season from the beginning.

I can honestly say I’ve never watched more than a couple minutes of this show. I think it’s because it reminds me of the old Gong Show.
