Alexandria Festival of Arts - Sept. 8-9

by Jon on September 3rd, 2007

The Alexandria Festival of the Arts is one the the areas most attended and most enjoyable art shows of the summer.  Over 200 artists from around the country turn King Street in Old Town Alexandria into an outdoor mega-gallery.

There will be over $15 million in fine art for sale, ranging from $20 to over $20,000 including paintings and prints, sculpture, pottery and ceramics, glass, jewelry and photography.

Skinny PeopleAt last year’s festival, I had conversations with several of the artists, including the artist pictured at the right.  His glass and metal human sculptures were some of the most unique (and humorous) pieces at the show. He had a really interesting story about how his art evolved over time. He was not only a glass blower but a welder and painter…with a great sense of humor.

And most attending artists are very friendly and more than happy to discuss their work and techniques.  You’ll most likely cruise by some booths and feel drawn to others.  With over 1,000 artists applying to participate in the show and only 200 selected, you know its not a run-of-the-mill art show.

There are also plenty of great place along King Street to stop for lunch or for a refreshing cocktail and a snack.

On Saturday, just for kids is the Alexandria Arts Safari at the Torpedo Factory from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with hands-on art for kids. Paintings
