Breakfast with Mom

Breakfast with Mom

While I’m certainly not a National Geographic photographer, I’m starting to feel like one these last couple mornings.  Again this AM while on a bike ride, I came  across a doe and her three cute fawns.  While usually very cautious and skittish with little ones around, this doe was exceptionally calm and seeming not bothered by me watching her young ones feed from less than 6 feet away.
It’s tough not to love their cute little faces and big ears.

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse

Have you ever wondered about the lonely life of a lighthouse keeper?
After a 30-minute boat ride out to one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the East Coast, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, you’ll be treated to a rare tour and history of the lighthouse led by docents from the Annapolis Maritime Museum.  You’ll experience the feel of what it was like to live as a lighthouse keeper in the late 1800s and throughout the 1900s.
Constructed in 1875, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the last screwpile lighthouse still in its original location, a mile and a half into the Chesapeake Bay …read more

Photo of the Week

Photo of the Week

I haven’t posted a Photo of the Week recently.  A couple weeks ago, I watched one of the season’s best sunsets yet. Even the geese (lower right) enjoyed it.

Close Encounter of the Deer Kind

Close Encounter of the Deer Kind

This morning, while on a bike ride through some  of my favorite local woods, I surprisingly came face-to-nose with a small herd of deer; a buck, two does and a two very cute fawns who were all casually feeding just a couple feet off the edge of the bike path.

The buck cautiously eyed me for several minutes before realizing that his morning breakfast was significantly more interesting than me.

Champagne Bubbles – A Tasting

Champagne Bubbles – A Tasting

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is enjoying a chilly glass (or two) of champagne.  I also love to visit many of the champagne producers in the Napa Valley and Sonoma county when I travel to see my family in California.
But there are so many types and styles of sparkling wines and champagnes. While the wine aficionado may turn their nose up at anything that is not “true” Champagne from the Champagne region in France, one should never ignore all the other interesting sparklers – Méthode Champenoise, prosecco, spumante, sparkling shiraz from Australia, or even a lightly sparkling vinho verde from …read more

The New York Dolls

The New York Dolls

Despite the fact that only a couple of the original five New York Dolls are still alive (two died from drug overdoses), here’s a chance to see one of rock’s truly influential and wild bands.
Call them pre-punk, proto-glam, or just high-energy with a “style” of their own, the Dolls influenced the future sounds of American punk, new wave, metal, glam and the grunge sound.  Not known for their musical talent in the earlier days (1970s), they made up for it in live shows with their outrageous (cross-dressing) costumes and hard-edged but kitsch attitude.
Their first break came from …read more

Virginia – A Top 5 Up & Coming Wine Region

The the July edition of Travel + Leisure magazine Virginia and its 130+ wineries were named as one of the five “up-and-coming” wine regions in the world and as such, the only American location to receive that distinction.

The article Wine-Lover’s Guide: 5 Wine Regions to Visit Now focused  on five of the most promising and enjoyable newer wine destinations, including areas of Spain, Central Otago in New Zealand, the region in Italy on the Adriatic coast becoming known for some of their white wines and Chile, plus Virginia’s enjoyable wine country.
To quote the article’s author:
