Frankie and Johnny were Lovers…well maybe.
It’s a workplace romance, well actually a workplace one-night stand between two unglamorous single people approaching middle age. The scene is her cramped studio apartment.
Johnny, a short-order cook, is a hopeless romantic who’s desperate for love, and deathly afraid of ending up alone, or worse, ignored.
Frankie, a waitress, has been burned in relationships many times in the past and is now petrified to let anyone in. She hides behind her self-protective wall, no one can get past.
She’s tainted, he’s a dreamer. She’s realistic and no-nonsense, he fantasizes of what might be. He opens his heart to her, she pushes him away. He can’t shut up, she can’t get a word in.
In the uncertainty of a new “relationship”, they express the emotions we feel and think, but most likely wouldn’t dare say out loud to another person.
As their evening of passion and discovery progresses, they uncover commonalities, each other’s needs, desires, dreams and fears trapped not just inside of them, but in all of us when we start a new relationship.
The dialog from this Tony award winner is witty, sharp, fast and hysterical. And at times, sad and revealingly personal.
